A Beginner's Guide: How To Actually Start Collecting Art

Are you interested in adding original art to your home, but feel overwhelmed and don't know where to start?

Buying art can be intimidating especially for someone just getting started! Whether you're looking to enhance your home's aesthetic & decor, invest in original artwork, or simply to surround yourself with beauty and color; this guide will help you start collecting art without all the hassle.

Imagine walking into your home infused with beauty and color tailored specifically to you with original fine art. Art has the power to transform spaces and elevate your home into something truly uniquely yours.

So, where do you start...?

There are countless artists, styles, and mediums to explore. But, the good news is that you don’t need to be an expert or have a huge budget to begin collecting art. Here are my top tips for building an art collection that will bring beauty, color & life to your home.

#1: Start with What You Love 💖

The most important rule is to choose art that speaks to you. Whether it’s a vibrant abstract painting, a serene landscape, or a striking portrait, your collection should resonate with you and how it makes you feel.  Remember, don't worry too much about trends—focus on pieces that make you feel something special.

A few ways to learn more about what kind of art speaks to you include:

  • Visit local art museums, art fairs & local galleries
  • Use Pinterest or other social platforms to do research & save your favorites for reference
  • Dig into interior design & home decor magazines for ideas on how to style artwork
  • Take an art class! I think this is the best way to dip a toe into the art world because it gives you an insight into how art is created and what you're drawn too.

#2: Set a Budget 💰

Once you have an idea of what type of art you're drawn too, the next step is to set your budget for your first art purchase. You may think that collecting art is an expensive hobby, but it doesn’t have to be. There are plenty of affordable options available, including works by emerging artists or limited edition prints. Remember, it’s about quality and connection, not the price tag.

#3: Research & Explore 📚

Knowledge is power when it comes to art collecting. Take the time to explore different styles, mediums, and artists. Visit galleries, attend art fairs, and browse online platforms like Instagram or Etsy. The more you immerse yourself in the art world, the better you’ll understand what you’re drawn to and what fits your collection.

#4: Consider Emerging Artists 🌟

Supporting emerging artists is not only a way to find affordable art, but it’s also an opportunity to discover unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. These artists are often on the cusp of something great, and their work can increase in value over time. Plus, you’ll be helping to support the careers of up-and-coming talent.

One great way to do this is to get involved in your local arts community - in the Tampa Bay area - we have a lot of little artist communities, but St. Petersburg, FL is the largest hub in the area for exhibits, galleries and emerging artists!

New and upcoming artists often offer more affordable artworks. Supporting emerging talent is not only incredibly rewarding, but their art might appreciate in value as they gain recognition over time.

#5: Focus on Quality over Quantity 🎨

When building your collection, it’s better to have a few pieces that you absolutely love rather than a large collection of art that doesn’t excite you. Invest in pieces that bring you joy every time you look at them. Over time, your collection will grow into a carefully curated gallery of your favorite works.

#6: Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions 🗣️

Whether you’re buying directly from an artist or through a gallery, don’t hesitate to ask about the artwork’s background, the artist’s journey, and the materials used. Understanding the story behind a piece can deepen your connection to it and make it even more meaningful.

#7: Mix and Match 🖼️

A diverse collection adds character to your home. Don’t be afraid to mix different sizes, styles, and mediums. A combination of paintings, sculptures, and prints can create a dynamic and interesting display. The key is to create a collection that feels cohesive yet varied—one that reflects your unique taste.

Ready to start your art collection? It’s time to take the first step. Begin by exploring your interests, setting a budget, and immersing yourself in the art world. Remember, the goal isn’t just to collect art; it’s to create a personal gallery that brings joy and inspiration into your life every day.
